Developing Writing Assignments Blog

The first sentence of this chapter mentions "traditional assignments". It's so interesting how it's something so simple and true. "When teachers confront a set of student papers, they begin evaluating them by reading the first word of the first paper in the stack." It's so basic but true. I have received papers that literally have had the first words circled. As a student, it can come off pretty discouraging. Dewey mentions, that it is not the best place to begin. I took away from the chapter that students' should demonstrate an interest in and understanding of the subject. Soooo true. The ultimate goal should be showing understanding of the subject while also providing a purpose of the composition. Depending on the level, I would ideally teach my ESL students to respect a subject and target an audience.
