Blog 9

I wanted to reflect on your comments on my literacy narrative. I don't know if I should be sharing this in a blog, but I really found them quite fascinating and thought, "Wow! This is why he is the teacher." First, I actually was not writing to my earlier self; I was just writing to any "confused kid" who was in the same boat as me, but it was something that I decided to add in at the last minute and clearly, it showed because you found something there that I could have made stronger. I definitely did not spend that much time on this choice because it was a spur-the-moment thing I really liked while writing, but you caught it right away! I wonder, in a literacy narrative, must I write to my younger self, or can I write to any confused kid, and if so, how would that change your suggestions about how I should go about making that a strong choice. Also calling the thesis statement idea a "tyranny" was hilarious and made me feel a little better that not everyone in the academic world is so rigid. I also was surprised that you did not think the translations were necessary because people can do their own work to find out what I said! You're right, and I am conditioned to apologize for being me too much!

I also wanted to point out the missed opportunity you mentioned in the part about hood literacy because in my peer review Hannah also told me to build on that. For some reason, I could not find a way to build on it. I just could not think of what to write to make that more substantial. I want to pick your brain about that one verbally in-office hours.

Next, I can describe how my brother passed; it is not that I did not want to. I was just concerned with making my literacy narrative a pity party. I always heard that when you answer the "Tell Me About Yourself" question, you never say anything sad so as not to start a pity party. I just had to mention him as he had a large part to do with where I am now. Do you think I should have to be afraid of hosting a pity party, or should I just go for it?

Finally, I have questions about all of your comments as I am pretty happy about how this turned out and would like to address the suggestions you made so I can publish this somewhere. Maybe the 5 people that read it will identify with it in some way. I also really appreciate a lot of the things you said about learning and capability- both personal to me and generally. I really did appreciate all of your feedback! It's amazing what detailed and helpful feedback can do, like the millions of essays we are reading about for this class!
