Blog #6 Oscar R. for 3/12/21
Hey everyone. The readings for this week were very interesting this week and I feel like there was a lot to work with. I will just be talking about some ideas and readings I found interesting and informative.
1. I enjoyed the Sigona reading. It was interesting to see how people said that what they post depends on the platform/app. Each app has its own "tone" and "vibe". It was interesting to see how everyone had their own image and personality depending on the app and the audience they had on that app. I was able to make connections to writing. Just like social media, students and writers have a duality, different voices, and different approaches depending on the writing, the genre, the audience, and the assignment. It was interesting to see this. I had a writing activity in mind when reading this. It would be interesting to give the class a prompt and have them write and respond to prompt pretending like they are writing and positing this on a specific app. So they would respond to the prompt in the way/manner they would post it on twitter, facebook, instagram, tiktok, etc. It would help them learn about various tones, writing for a specific audience, and allow them to explore different voices.
2. The Trainor reading was one that left completely shocked and mind blown. I have no experience teaching since I just turned 21 a few days ago so I had not seen this in a classroom before. I had never experienced this at school at all. It was shocking to see and read all of the racial attacks and racial comments the students had. It really got me thinking and stressing about how I would deal with this as a teacher. My goal was always to be a "good" teacher. By that I mean, be a teacher that is supportive, caring, loving, and one that believes in equity. I want to help those students that aren't normally helped and supported. I want to be there for them and foster them and allow them to feel safe. To think that what Trainor talked about could possibly happen in my classroom completely hurt me in a way and shocked me. It is something for some reason I never expected, saw coming, or thought I would have to deal with. This reading really made me sit and think and think about I would address this and how I would raise awareness and educate the class. It also made me think that there should be some form of classes or training that help teachers deal with this and learn how to tackle these issues.
Overall, these two readings were the ones I found the most important and interesting. They have definitely helped me think about the future and what I would do as a teacher whether it be lesson planning, teaching how to write, and educating the class on racial issues and curating a classroom that fosters and promotes equity and protection for minority students.
