Blog #4: Oscar
Hello everyone,
Every week I find it so interesting how we are supposed to learn new things that help us teach writing and understand writing to help students, but the funny part is that I keep on learning things for myself that I still struggle with!
An example of this is in chapter 10 of Lindemann's text. Lindemann talks about the practice and the importance of "decombining". I was able to relate to this so much. I need practice “decombining” sentences. I feel like in most of my papers I try to curate these crazy complicated sentences to explain my thoughts fully and it just ends up confusing the readers. As Lindemann mentioned, I also do it to appear “smarter” and to impress the teacher and showcase that I truly did understand. I really need to work on this some more. I think I got better at this over the last semester when I realized that quantity is definitely not quality nor does quantity make up for the quality. This was a bad habit I developed during my early high school years and definitely got bigger during the my early undergrad years. I feel like this would be good practice to help students improve their writing.
The next part I found really intriguing was when Lindemann talked about the activity of taking on various styles. think in order to develop style we need to be able to identity what other author’s style is and see various different styles. I think having students imitate a style would be very useful since it can help them identify some key aspects and help them see what they like and don’t like to help them develop their own style. I also feel like students will love this because it is fun. I see myself using this activity in the classroom for sure!
