Blog 4 - Kelly Garzon
Hi, Everyone -
At the beginning of CH. 5 of Lindemann, she mentions that teaching English requires a second kind of knowledge, a "conscious understanding" of linguistic principles. I was keen to understand and get some more insight into what she meant here. Some points in this chapter really made me stop and realize the basic stuff we do. For example, because we make meaning of our world through language, it reveals what a society regards as being important.
In my Seminar in Linguistics class, we spoke about the hierarchy of language. How a woman must sound more formal and if she were to curse many people are more likely to talk down on the person. However, it is different for a man. When I read that sentence it reminded me much of that conversation.
