Sophia Lopez's Marked for Life Post - Blog 1
Reading Sophia Lopez's 'Marked for Life' was one that stuck out to me the most because I could strongly relate to her writing. I connected her writing to Shen's since they both spoke of creating a unique voice and developing a personality that adapts to the writing audience. For example, Lopez discusses how her writing developed throughout her time at Northeastern University because of the various experiences she had. She struggled a lot at first but through time, she came out and was able to achieve her own success and finding her own voice. Acts such as her erasing the accent above her last name demonstrated how a lot of Latinos tend to remove their connection to their culture in order to improve their socioeconomic status. I strongly felt this because I felt, when I was younger, that I tried to sever ties with my ethnicity. I was born fair-skinned for a Latina and went to a private catholic school in the Santa Monica area, which leads me to be around a lot of Anglo-Americans and others besides my own race. This affected how I spoke when I went back home and for some time, how I treated my own kind. It was a very dark time for me and looking back now, I am very proud of my heritage and who I become. I appreciate my ethnic background because I realize how much value it brings to me and how my culture impacts my life. I would not have it any other way and am very happy that I am pursuing my MA in English because one of my goals is to teach my future students to accept themselves for who they are.
