Hello everyone,
I found this weeks readings very informative and many of the things we read are stuff I see myself implementing in the future when I become a teacher.
It's quite interesting to see how many different types of "invention work" exist. There is a grand variety of them. I wish as a student, I was exposed to this and my teachers had us do some of these. I feel like they ultimately really help students think, organize, plan, and practice. This week I found the pie method to be very cool and intriguing. It is an interesting model to show students how every sentence, paragraph, piece of composition helps organize and affects the larger whole structure. I loved this model because it is very fun and different model that many students will have fun with and will enjoy. I also feel like this model is very beneficial and crucial to pre-writing because it helps and makes students think about how everything leads to the final product and the bigger whole. I definitely see myself implementing this model and allowing my future students use this as a pre-writing exercise.
Another thing that stood out to me was from the Lindemann reading. In chapter 8, they talk about "flexibility". Lindemann addresses how flexibility is a huge part of being able to write successfully and a huge part of writing process. Flexibility allows for a proper use of pre-writing. By no means should pre-writing have a “due date”. Pre-writing should be a natural and helpful process which allows students to plan and open their minds to think. Flexibility allows students to explore even further and think deeper. It allows for new ideas and new perspectives rather than having limited time and sticking to their original thought or the “teacher’s thought”. Having that flexibility will also allow writers to improve and take their time with their essays which will strengthen their writing. I definitely see myself doing this. I like the concept of not having "due dates". It calms down students and allows them to try and do their absolute best. Being flexible and allowing that flexibility is just as important as everything else we teach students.
Overall Takeaways from the Readings:
1. Implementing fun and different pre-writing activities that encourage the students and help them learn/practice. ex: pie model
2. Flexibility: Give them time to learn, think, practice, grow, and WRITE!
