Lopez Response
The Lopez piece resonated with me for a few reasons and, because this is a blog, I am going to write a listicle.
1. Lopez's comment on page 143 about viewing her mom as Wonder Woman and how that related to her education is a strong example of the importance of having adults stress the value of education. That passage also exemplified how our views of our parents change as we age.
2. Lopez wrote about two issues that I assign in my classes. The first, on page 143, is about the American Dream. The second, on page 145, is about feeling stuck between different cultures. My research paper asks my students to write about a lie in society. Many choose the American Dream and have said they enjoy this topic because it provides them the freedom to research and write about what interests them. My second essay is a response to a story written by a Mexican-American college student who argues people bond more because of race than class. She writes that she doesn't speak Spanish and has been to Mexico only once and that was to visit a resort. My students also enjoy this essay because they find ways to connect their experiences to the larger idea of being caught between cultures.
3. On page 160, Lopez writes about students who know when teachers don't respect them. This is so vital. I try to build rapport with my students on the first day of the semester and grow that rapport throughout our time together.
